They would rather romp around and explore the world than stand still for the camera.
And smiling at the push of a button is next to impossible, especially for babies and toddlers.

Ideas for creative children’s photos to make yourself
At the very beginning of my self-employment, I was pretty much puzzled as to how best to get children to take part in shootings.
Over time, I developed and implemented more and more ideas.
And it’s actually quite easy, because children are really enthusiastic about the simplest things in the world.
Here I show you some ideas that I implement myself in my family and children’s shoots.
#1 Photographing kids under the covers
It sounds difficult, but it really isn’t. Toddlers love to play under the covers. You kill two birds with one stone: smiling faces and a very special picture idea!
You simply throw the blanket over their heads, pull them up again after a few seconds without warning and snap at the same time. That has the perfect surprise effect.
Alternatively, you can crawl under the covers and take the photos right here.
But then it is worth using a light, thin blanket or bed sheet that is as light as possible so that you still have enough light underneath to take pictures.
If you’re near a window that casts light on the ceiling, you’ll make it even easier for your camera.
Give the kids a flashlight. This conjures up great light effects on their faces!
Another alternative: Build a cave out of chairs and blankets. This gives you more leeway under the ceiling. Again, the closer the window and the lighter the ceiling, the better!
#2 Family photos jumping on the bed
You can take really action-packed children’s photos when the kids are allowed to jump on the bed.
Caution : If there are several children, it is best to put a few pillows on the floor so that nobody can hurt themselves.
If you kneel next to the bed and photograph them from below while they jump, the photos will be even more unusual. Don’t be afraid to take other positions. There are no limits for your creativity!
My tip : You can also take an adult into the picture who is throwing a child onto the bed. If you kneel on the other side of the bed, the child flies towards you and you focus on it, you have a great action photo!
#3 Photograph kids baking
When it comes to playing around with food, no child can resist.
Just take flour and baking powder and bake a cake. Children love kneading the dough and spilling the ingredients on themselves. They are fully concentrated on the project, so you can photograph them in peace.
Feel free to get closer, change the perspective several times or put bowls and ingredients in the foreground and focus on the child. This gives a nice composition.
#4 Running towards the camera
If you have several children who are at least three years old, you can also organize races. According to the motto “Whoever is first to the camera wins”. Kids always do that!
My tip : Have the kids line up at the invisible starting line and start taking photos now. They will seldom stand next to each other as beautifully and attentively as they do before the starting gun is fired. This way you can get them all sharp in the picture even with a large aperture.
Another tip : While they are running towards you, snap them off as often as possible. If your camera allows it, use the continuous shooting function.
#5 Bring candles into the picture
Of course, these photos are great for the Christmas season, but you can also creatively take candles into the picture at other times of the year.
Candles always have a special attraction for children. They look fascinated at the flame and at the same time the flame conjures up a warm, soft light on their faces. And they keep quiet long enough. The best conditions for a beautiful picture!
My tip : Take a picture with a very fast shutter speed, then you have a nice dark background and only the faces lit by the candle are visible.
#6 Child photography with soap bubbles
Whether babies, toddlers or school children: Soap bubbles always work. Not only do they spread a good mood among the kids, they also make a pretty element in the picture design.
However, because it is almost impossible to blow soap bubbles and take photos at the same time, it is worth buying a bubble machine . They are available from Amazon for around 20 euros and always put children in a good mood.
So you can take pictures of them while the kids chase the soap bubbles.
Note : It is best to work with manual focus here, otherwise the autofocus can focus on the soap bubbles as they whirl between the camera and the subject.
